Gaylor Baird stands out in mayoral race
Under ordinary circumstances, the Journal Star editorial board endorses a pair of candidates to advance from the primary into the general election.
But this year’s crowded field to replace Mayor Chris Beutler following the passage of an initiative retroactively limiting him to three terms, though, is far from ordinary.
Among the five people seeking to become Lincoln’s next mayor, three have suitable experience that would transition nicely to the mayor’s office. The editorial board believes city councilwomen Leirion Gaylor Baird and Cyndi Lamm and City Attorney Jeff Kirkpatrick could adequately handle the responsibilities of being the city’s chief executive.
After meeting with all five candidates individually, the editorial board believes Gaylor Baird’s background and vision set her above the pack at this point and endorses her to advance into the general election.
